Work Related Learning Programme

This course is designed for 14 - 19 year olds, currently in full-time education who want to spend one-day a week at the Northern Racing College working towards a National Vocational Qualification Level 1 in Racehorse Care. For many, this initial training course leads to permanent employment in the horseracing industry upon completion of the students full-time studies. Students for this course are enrolled following a recommendation made by a member of staff at their school.
No experience is needed, just a passion for horses and a commitment to be reliable, hard working and motivated.
Course Information
4-term course commencing September to December the following year.
- The course cost £2000 for all four terms (payable in advance at the start of each term).
- The course is one day per week during term time only.
- Transport to and from the Northern Racing College will be the responsibility of the school.
- Students must bring a skull cap (matching Kite Mark standards PAS015, BSEN1384 or ASTMF1163 ( USA standard), jodhpur boots and half chaps or long riding boots.
- The Northern Racing College will provide students with a body protector and other essential personal protective equipment.
- Each group will be supervised by a qualified instructor/assessor.

Students attending this course will be eligable to apply for the residential Level 2 NVQ course when they leave school. Having achieved their Level 1 NVQ in Racehorse Care, should they be suitable, the Northern Racing College will find them a placement in a racehorse trainer's yard, where they will complete an Apprenticeship programme, including a Level 2 NVQ in Racehorse Care. This can lead to the Advanced Apprenticeship, including a Level 3 NVQ in Racehorse Care and Management.
Do students need any prior experience with horses?
No, the course is open to complete beginners. All students need is a desire to work with horses.
What does the course include?
Each programme includes National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) which, unlike traditional qualifications, demonstrate that a student is competent and can perform to the standard required by the racing industry. Programmes cover a wide range of subjects including riding thoroughbred racehorses, mucking out, tack cleaning, grooming and other horse husbandry activities, as well as theoretical elements, for example, lectures on horse health and many other subjects and seminars.
A "typical" training day would consist of:
08.00 - 09.30 arrive, muck out and tack up.
09.30 - 12.00 ride out
12.00 - 13.00 yard duties
13.00 - 14.00 lunch
14.00 - 14.30 lectures/key skills training
14.30 - 16.30 evening stables
