Level 3 Diploma / Advanced Apprenticeship

When a student has completed the Apprenticeship programme he/she can then progress onto the Advanced Apprenticeship programme. This includes a Level 3 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care and Management, an Advanced Technical Certificate in Horsecare and Key Skills.

As with the Apprenticeship programme , the Advanced Apprenticeship is completed largely at the student's place of work, with a member of the Northern Racing College, Quality Assurance team visiting every 8 - 10 weeks to complete assessments.

What Does an Advanced Apprenticeship Involve?

1. The qualification involves 8 projects of written work, learning and study, collecting evidence of your competency and practical assessments.

  • Horse Health
  • Feeding
  • Horse Clothing
  • Plaiting and Clipping
  • Transportation
  • Training and Breaking the Young Horse
  • Health and Safety in the Workplace

Either:

  • Riding a variety of racehorses in work and schooling over hurdles and fences and/or riding through the starting stalls
  • Racing, including the declaration procedure, saddling a runner and designing and overseeing a training programme for racehorses

Or:

  • Breeding including; assisting with teasing and covering, maintaining stud documents, attending to a mare and foal during foaling and care for a mare and foal

In order to complete the Level 3 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care and Management individuals must achieve all the mandatory units and one group of optional units.

The Advanced Technical Certificate is a multi choice exam testing the underpinning knowledge requirements of the Level 3 Diploma.

We will accredit prior learning wherever possible to reduce Key Skill requirements. Students are required to supply proof of GCSE grades A-C in Maths , English or English Literature and any grade in Information Technology within the last five years. Previous Key Skills/Core Skills achievements at the required level, A Levels and some Scottish grades can also count as exemptions.

PLEASE NOTE: You cannot do a Level 3 Diploma alone unless you pay for it privately (please see below). To achieve the Advanced Apprenticeship, you must complete all the above qualifications, and by joining the programme, you are agreeing to undertake and attempt the whole package.

How will achieving the Advanced Apprenticeship benefit my career?

An Advanced Apprenticeship is an ideal way to increase your knowledge and completion is a statement that you are practically competent to perform the practical duties listed above. The Advanced Apprenticeship also prepares individuals for positions of responsibility.

The Level 3 Diploma is linked to the Grade A racing wage.

A Level 3 Diploma is a Mandatory requirement for all prospective licensed racehorse trainers and permit holders. As many modern trainers have completed their Level 3 Diploam, they are aware of the research, knowledge and work that goes into a portfolio and are recruiting on the basis of this qualification.

Who can register for an Advanced Apprenticeship?

Anyone between the age of 16 and 50, who works at least 16 hours a week, in a licensed racing stable in England. Students must already have completed their Level 2 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care qualification OR have relevant occupational experience.

How much will the Advanced Apprenticeship cost?

Nothing! This programme is funded by the South Yorkshire Learning and Skills Council. Where students need to attend the Northern Racing College for training, or to sit exams we will provide free accommodation and meals for the duration of the stay.

I am over the age of 25; can I commence a Level 3 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care and Management without the need to complete Key Skills and a Technical Certificate?

Yes, although you would have to fund the qualification yourself. The cost for the Level 3 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care and Management is currently £400.00.
