The seventh Charles Owen sponsored Racecourse Pony Racing Series is fast approaching. The first meeting of the season will take place in April, and during 2010 over twenty racecourses will support the series by staging two pony races on the same card as the professional races.

In preparation for the new season the Northern Racing College are holding training days for riders aged 9 - 15. Taking place during the school holidays training commence at 12.30pm, finishing at 4.30pm and is open to those with no previous experience of race-riding, through to seasoned junior jockeys.

Ponies of all shapes and sizes are welcome to take part. The overall aim of a training day is to improve the junior jockey's position, technique and confidence whilst riding at speed and to develop their understanding of race-riding and the horseracing industry.

Training Days are run on a level based system

Level 1 is the introductory level for riders who are attending their first training day, and those who have not ridden in any form of Pony Race. Progress to the next level is determined by the Northern Racing College Jockey Coach.

Level 2 is designed for junior jockeys who have finished in the first four in two or more pony races (on the pony they intend riding during the training day); this includes Pony Club Pony Races, Point-to-Point Pony Races and the Racecourse Series, sponsored by Charles Owen.

Level 3 day is open to riders who have won a pony race or finished second in two or more pony races (on the pony they intend riding during the training day); this includes Pony Club Pony Races, Point-to-Point Pony Races and the Racecourse Series, sponsored by Charles Owen.

*Level 2 and Level 3 training day offers riders the chance to review pony races they have participated in and receive constructive feedback from our Jockey Coach.

*Riders must supply copy of the race/s on either a DVD or video.

Training takes place in the classroom, on the racehorse simulators and on the riders own pony. Each session is videoed, with a review concluding each day. Riders receive a certificate and a training report.

The cost for each level is £40.00 (inc VAT) per pony/rider combination. The maximum number of riders per session will be ten.

Riders must have their own personal accident cover and PPE (i.e. skull hat, body protector (Level 3 standard) and boots etc). It is not necessary to purchase racing equipment to attend a Level 1 training day. A general purpose saddle, with sufficient holes in the stirrup leathers to shorten up will be sufficient.
