The Leger Legends Race – Benefiting the Northern Racing Community

Graphic: St. Leger Legends Race LogoThe Leger Legends Race Committee is delighted to announce that the inaugural running of The Leger Legends Race will take place on the opening day of this year’s Ladbrokes St Leger Festival at Doncaster Racecourse on Wednesday, 8 September.

The race will feature a host of legendary former professional jockeys, including multi-champion flat jockey Pat Eddery, Professional Jockeys Association Chief Executive and ex-champion jockey Kevin Darley, as well as John Francome and Peter Scudamore, who between them won the jump jockeys title no fewer than 15 times.

The Committee are also pleased to announce that Lester Piggott, arguably the most celebrated jockey in racing history will be attending the lunch and has kindly agreed to present the trophies to the connections of the winning horse.

The race is being arranged to help raise funds for two northern-based charity projects designed to benefit people starting out in racing as well as those at the end of their careers:

  • “The House that Jack Built” –  is Jack Berry’s aspiration for an Injured Jockeys Fund facility to be based in the north, similar to the acclaimed IJF Oaksey House jockeys retirement and rehabilitation centre in Lambourn, Berkshire

and

  • The Northern Racing College residential course facility  – which will enable the College to meet the oversubscribed demand for Foundation Stable Staff courses as well as extending the range of residential courses it would like to offer the northern racing community

The day will begin with a champagne reception, sponsored by At The Races, and lunch, in a private marquee, which will  feature an auction with some fantastic “money can’t buy” items, as well as a silent auction.

Jack Berry has already pledged the proceeds of his latest book Better Late than Never to The House that Jack Built project, and comments: “We’ve already raised £73,000 from the book sales and this raceday will be another tremendous step towards our targets for the project.  It will be a great day and the enthusiasm from the participating jockeys so far is fantastic.”

Dawn Goodfellow, Chief Executive of the Northern Racing College, added: “NRC are delighted to be associated with The Leger Legends Race. We are reliant on fundraising for the residential  development, and to be part of such a high profile event will be a huge boost for us.”

An all-inclusive price of £1,250 for a table of 10 is being offered, with premier raceday passes and reserved car-parking, champagne reception, a three course lunch, wine and afternoon tea.
