Advanced Apprenticeship Programme

When a learner has completed the Apprenticeship programme he/she can then progress onto the Advanced Apprenticeship programme. This includes a Level 3 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care and Management, an Advanced Technical Certificate in Horsecare and Key Skills.

As with the Apprenticeship programme, the Advanced Apprenticeship is completed largely at the learner’s place of work, with a member of the Northern Racing College, Quality Assurance team visiting every 8 – 10 weeks to complete assessments.

Who can register for an Advanced Apprenticeship?

Anyone between the age of 16 and 50, who works at least 16 hours a week, in a licensed racing stable in England. Learners must already have completed their Level 2 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care qualification OR have relevant occupational experience.

What Does an Advanced Apprenticeship Involve?

The qualification involves 8 projects of written work in horse care and management and include optional specialist areas, learning and study, collecting evidence of competency and practical assessments.

  • An Emergency First Aid Certificate
  •  An Advanced Technical Certificate in Horse Care

The Advanced Technical Certificate is a multi choice exam testing the underpinning knowledge requirements of the Level 3 Diploma.

  • Key Skills
    Level 2 Communication (English)
Level 2 Application of Numbers (Maths )
    Level 2 Working with Others
    Level 1 Information Technology

We will accredit prior learning wherever possible to reduce Key Skill requirements. Learners are required to supply proof of GCSE grades A-C in Maths , English or English Literature and any grade in Information Technology within the last five years. Previous Key Skills/Core Skills achievements at the required level, A Levels and some Scottish grades can also count as exemptions.

PLEASE NOTE: A Level 3 Diploma cannot be undertaken alone unless paid for privately (please see below). To achieve the Advanced Apprenticeship, all of the above qualifications must be completed, and by joining the programme, learners are agreeing to undertake and attempt the whole package.

How will achieving the Advanced Apprenticeship benefit my career?

An Advanced Apprenticeship is an ideal way to increase knowledge and completion is a statement of practical competence to perform the duties listed above. The Advanced Apprenticeship also prepares individuals for positions of responsibility.

The Level 3 Diploma is linked to the Grade A racing wage.

A Level 3 Diploma is a Mandatory requirement for all prospective licensed racehorse trainers and permit holders. As many modern trainers have completed their Level 3 Diploma, they are aware of the research, knowledge and work that goes into a portfolio and are recruiting on the basis of this qualification.

How much will the Advanced Apprenticeship cost?

Nothing! This programme is funded by the South Yorkshire Learning and Skills Council. Where learners need to attend the Northern Racing College for training, or to sit exams we will provide free accommodation and meals for the duration of the stay.

Learners over the age of 25 can commence a Level 3 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care and Management without the need to complete Key Skills and a Technical Certificate.  However they are required to privately fund the qualification.  The cost for the level 3 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care and management is currently £400.00.
