New Jockey Coaching and Mentoring course.

THE Northern Racing College is playing a key role in a new British Horseracing Authority project to introduce a coaching and mentoring programme designed to improve levels of horsemanship and professionalism in the sport.

For the past year, eight jockeys have been training for their UKCC coaching qualification. John Reid, Mick Fitzgerald, Kevin Darley, Richard Perham, Michael Tebbutt, Graham Lee, Craig Benton and Jimmy Bleasdale have successfully completed the course, which is a widely regarded, top level sports coaching qualification used in the majority of sports.

Eight conditional jockeys who have attended the Northern Racing College licence course and eight apprentices from the British Racing School in Newmarket have been selected to pilot the coaching and mentoring scheme.

Each has been allocated one of the coaches to provide one-to-one coaching in all aspects of their career, including technical riding support, motivation, confidence, fitness and communication skills.

The jockeys will receive coaching until they have ridden sufficient winners to ride against senior jockeys on the same weight terms. The aim of the programme is to help jockeys achieve non-claiming status sooner than would be the norm.

The programme was driven by a desire to expand the level of ongoing training and support for young jockeys, as well as to improve the consistency and structure of any coaching currently provided. It was introduced following extensive consultation between the British Horseracing Authority, Professional Jockeys Association, National Trainers Federation and a number of trainers, and will be funded through contributions from jockeys and trainers.

In the long-term the aim will be to recognise achievements while the jockey is coached through a certification or qualification that could become an industry standard .

In the New Year, Phase 2 of the pilot will be extended to bring an additional 16 jockeys from two more licence courses and a selection of 5lb and 3lb claimers on to the programme.

Grand National-winning jockey Mick Fitzgerald, who completed his coaching qualification at the NRC, said: “This coaching scheme has been needed for some time and is a great step in the right direction. I only wish it had been available when I was riding. I am really looking forward to coaching and giving something back to the industry.”

The BHA's training, welfare and community associate Sam Martin said: “The coaches have really committed themselves to achieving the UKCC qualification and worked hard in gaining the extra skills and knowledge required to pass the tough assessments.

"We are looking forward to working with them and their trainers to get the programme up and running and making an impact. This coaching initiative is the first step in developing more comprehensive training for jockeys throughout their careers.”
