Lee Swift, Lead Yard Supervisor, on the importance of fitness

Lee Swift, Lead Yard Supervisor at the National Horseracing College and former jockey is hugely instrumental in the students riding development.

During his interview, Lee explains the purpose of the racehorse simulator exercise and how it improves the students balance, ability to control and steady their horse and their fitness.

Lee graduated from the 12-week residential Foundation Course almost 20 years ago. In his role as Lead Yard Supervisor he shares with our students his knowledge and industry experience and teaches them how daily tasks are carried out in a racing yard. He is also often found driving the gallop vehicle alongside the students when they’re learning the art of riding a racehorse on the gallops. Lee remains actively involved in the racecourse scene as a part-time stalls handler.

Lee has passed his extensive racing knowledge onto hundreds of students over the last five years and particularly enjoys following the students progress when they take up their work placements in racing yards. During his racecourse work he regularly sees students leading horses up and for those who hold a jockey licence, riding on the racecourse. It is these successes which put an extra spring in his step.
